20150616 132832 240x166The PDC Process

Learn the unique challenges of the Planning, Design and Construction Process in Healthcare. At the same time, learn some of the techniques for overcoming these challenges. Building a new healthcare building or a significant expansion or renovation involves many people. Communication and interaction between all parties is the key to a successful healthcare construction project. This segment will explore how builders, owners, consultants and suppliers can play an important role in facilitating this process to ensure the construction project goes smoothly.

Sustainability

At a time when natural resources are recognized as a limited resource, responsibility in the use of these resources has become a priority in many sectors.  Healthcare buildings are typically highly energy intensive.  We will explore the value of sustainability elements in the design and operation of healthcare buildings and balance this responsibility with our primary objective of patient care.

Safety and Security

Healthcare buildings hold several safety and security concerns that are exacerbated by normal construction activities. Learn the areas of the healthcare building that require special attention to protect the building occupants during the construction sequence. At the same time, working in a healthcare building can create unique risks for the construction workers and anybody working in a healthcare building should be aware of what, and where these challenges are.

Infection Control

The introduction of the 2022 Canadian Standards Association standard requiring special construction procedures to reduce the risk of infectious agents traveling from construction areas to the vulnerable population within the healthcare building (CAN/CSA Z317.13:22) has changed the way construction occurs in healthcare buildings. This standard was most recently updated early in 2022 and will continue this evolution of the healthcare construction environment. Participants in the CanHCC program will learn the latest thinking in this field and will be better positioned to do construction work safely in healthcare buildings.

Communication Exercise

Communication is vital to a successful construction project. Participants will be engaged in a “construction project” that will challenge their communication capabilities. Learn some of the techniques to improve your construction communication. You will also see, first hand, why some construction projects struggle simply because of the challenges that arise in the field of communicating during a construction project.

Technology

In no field does technology change faster than the healthcare sector. This session will take participants through advances in healthcare technology. We will explore both the impact on patient care and the impact the technology has on the builder who is installing this equipment. Participants will gain insight into the equipment, its use and its installation requirements which will position them to ensure that their technology installations can be completed with as few construction changes as possible.

Emergency Preparedness

In order to protect their patients, healthcare facilities build and maintain emergency plans to deal with unusual events. The expectation does not change during construction. This session will help participants become aware of the impact of those unforeseen events during construction. On commercial or industrial projects, these events may create a nuisance or schedule delays. However, in healthcare projects, they may become life threatening. Participants will learn techniques to prepare for such events and even some measures that can be taken to avoid them all together.

Day Two • 08:00 am to 3:30 pm
Registration and Continental Breakfast: 07:30 am-08:00 am
*Note: The program will begin at 08:00 am sharp

Construction Risk Assessment and Special Environments

Construction activity creates unique risks to the occupants of healthcare buildings. From the risks associated with the spread of infection to the alteration of life safety systems that are required in order to finish a construction project. Construction activities need to follow the requirements of the healthcare facility in order to protect the safety of the building occupants. Knowing where these risks exist will allow the builder to use appropriate measures to mitigate these risks and potentially life threatening situations.

Healthcare Facility Planning

In 2018, the Canadian Standards Association released the inaugural edition of CSA Z8000-18 Canadian Healthcare Facilities. This groundbreaking document outlines planning procedures and special requirements in the planning of healthcare facilities. We will explore the basic principles of this comprehensive document and give attendees and understanding of the impact of the standard in the Canadian Healthcare environment.

Commissioning

The complexity and interrelationships of all the various systems in any healthcare building demand that their functionality be verified before occupancy. Making sure that the first patient can expect the same level of service as any other patient demands a comprehensive commissioning program. Commissioning in healthcare has a degree of rigor beyond most other buildings and, as such, requires a systematic approach. We will explore various approaches to commissioning.

Electrical Systems

Electrical systems in healthcare buildings can be very complex. Many buildings have essential electrical system (which include generators, transfer switches and synchronization equipment), uninterruptible power supplies and even isolated power systems. Each of these is governed by different standards and codes. Participants will learn how these systems work, and the regulations that govern their installation and operation.

Mechanical and Plumbing Systems

Similar to the electrical systems, mechanical and plumbing systems in healthcare buildings are different than any other type of building. They too, are governed by many different standards and codes that place restrictions on the types of systems that can be used and in which locations they might be used. There are maintenance and operations requirements in many of these codes and standards. Knowing what these regulations are, before beginning a construction project can avoid unnecessary delays and costly changes during the construction project.

Medical Gas

Another area that has significant code, standard and regulation implications is the area of medical gas. There are many different medical gas and vacuum systems in healthcare. Each has a different application which drives different installation and maintenance requirements. The 2022 introduction of a new CSA standard (CSA Z7396.1:22) has brought with it, many changes to the medical gas field. Participants will learn the most recent information in this field.

Owner Expectations of Designers and Constructors

If you are a builder working in the healthcare field, one of the challenges is to learn your client’s expectations. The healthcare field is unique in this area. During this session, participants will gain insight into what the Senior Administration of healthcare organizations need from their construction teams.

Lunch is provided both days.

I have many years of experience in safety and when I took the Canadian Healthcare Construction Course I was very impressed with the course content and how the instructors presented it. As many know, we learn something new every day and the CHES construction course opened my eyes and taught me things that we don’t normally consider in construction outside of healthcare facilities, or in general industry. I highly recommend the CHES construction course to anyone who is interested in increasing their safety knowledge, not only as a construction worker but in all areas of safety.
