IWK Health - NICU / PICU & Children's Emergency Building

IWK Health is the Women’s & Children’s tertiary care teaching and research hospital for the entire maritime provinces and for some patients from Newfoundland and Labrador. The main campus recently opened modern neonatal (NICU) and pediatric (PICU) intensive care units (occupying ~36,000 square feet) and is currently constructing an advanced children’s emergency care building (~72,000 square feet) with underground parking garage for ~300 vehicles (102,000 square feet).
Please join us for a tours of active / operational NICU and PICU units demonstrating modern architectural lean designs to facilitate the latest intensive care procedures. Critical care design guidelines and principles were adhered to by utilizing CSA Z8000 guidelines and the Society for Critical Care Medicine’s Guidelines for Intensive Care Unit Design. The units host 55 single patient rooms including both airborne infection isolation rooms (negative pressure), and protective environment rooms (positive pressure); All with attention to privacy, including switchable privacy e-glass to help maintain adequate sight lines for monitoring of critically ill patients. Boom mounted equipment, medical gases, power, and data provide 360 degrees access to the patient bed. All supported by our award winning “Dial-For-Dining” / room-service style catering for patients and families.
As well please join us for a “behind-the-walls” tour of the new children’s emergency care building actively under construction. This green building will meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED® - Silver) certification. The emergency care unit will incorporate pre-triage area and private triage spaces for increased confidentiality; Be divided into four zones of acuity (trauma/resuscitation, high acuity, low acuity, and mental health); With each zone hosting their own waiting space and consultation / exam rooms to improve efficiency and to bring patients closer to the care team earlier in their visit. Personal Protective Equipment is required and will be provided as this is an active construction site.

Pat Wardell is a talented multi-instrumentalist and singer who has been on the South Shore music scene for more than a decade. A native of Lunenburg, Pat grew up in a musical household where his mother had a love for the piano and his father had a passion for playing the keys, and his brother for the drums. He began playing the piano at the age of five, and then added the guitar and eventually the drums – singing the whole way through. Beginning with a series of cover songs, and a particular passion for the blues, Pat has recently been feverishly writing original tunes. His musical style can be described as a diverse sound of blues, country and rock. He currently plays in two bands called Radio in Colors and The Essentials. An elementary school teacher, Pat now lives in Chester Basin with his wife and baby girl – who has proven to be the inspiration of his newfound love of writing. |

The Rostova String Quartet

Ian Stewart
In addition to hypnosis, Ian holds more Guinness World Records than any other Canadian. His records range from records with fire eating, doing magic tricks very fast, and even juggling chainsaws. Ian studied hypnosis originally for the therapy side of it. His specialties included smoking cessation, weight loss, fears, and even pain management. On stage, Ian uses his skills with hypnosis to share laughter, and makes his volunteers not only feel amazing, but also makes them the stars of the show! |
Formed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, The Rostova String Quartet is a chamber music group composed of emerging string performers. Though the ensemble officially formed in 2023, its members have performed together for several years in various chamber and orchestral settings. The quartet performs a vast classical and popular repertoire, while also premiering new works by young Canadian composers. The ensemble’s name “Rostova” commemorates the first piece the musicians played as a quartet: “Rostova” from the War and Peace Suite by James Thomas, an active pianist and composer in Halifax. 
Ian Stewart has been in the entertainment business for over 30 years. In that time he has performed over 2000 live shows around the world. He's also appeared on such television programs as Americas Got Talent, Penn & Teller Fool Us, The Late Show with David Letterman and the Tonight Show With Jay Leno.
